Outdoor Activities in Marana

If you’ve been in Marana for more than five minutes, you already know… being outside is kind of our thing. Between golden desert sunrises, endless trails, and epic views, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities in Marana to soak up. Whether you’re into hiking, biking, golfing, birding, horseback riding, or just finding a quiet spot to breathe and reset, this is your local guide to the best outdoor activities in Marana.

Hiking

The Tortolita Mountains are one of the most loved hiking spots in Marana and for good reason. Tucked into the north end of town, this rugged mountain range offers incredible desert views, peaceful trails, and that wide-open Arizona feeling you can’t help but soak in. It’s a favorite with locals for early morning hikes, quick escapes into nature, and weekend adventures that don’t require a long drive.

There are two main access points to the trails:

  • Wild Burro Trailhead (off Dove Mountain Blvd) tell the guard at the gate you are headed to the trails

  • Tortolita Preserve Trailhead (at Moore Rd and Dove Mountain Blvd)

From those trailheads, you’ll find a variety of trail options, from beginner-friendly to more challenging loops with elevation. Whether you’re after a mellow walk or a lung-busting climb, there’s something for every pace.

Friendly reminder for desert hiking:

  • Always bring plenty of water and turn back when you’ve used half.

  • Start early because the desert heat kicks in fast, even in the shoulder seasons.

  • These trails are dog-friendly, but make sure your pup stays hydrated too.

Biking

Suppose you’re into road biking, cruising with a view, or just getting outside to move your body. In that case, the Chuck Huckleberry Loop is one of the best suburban outdoor experiences in Southern Arizona. This award-winning, 131-mile paved path loops around the entire Tucson metro area, and in late 2024, Marana was proud to announce the completion of a new portion of The Loop, giving residents and visitors full access right from town. It’s become one of the most popular outdoor activities in Marana, drawing locals and visitors alike.

The Loop is a multi-use path that’s perfect for biking, walking, jogging, skating, and stroller time. It’s car-free, pet-friendly (leashes required), and fully paved, which makes it versatile no matter how you want to enjoy it.

You’ll find multiple parking areas throughout Marana, and several of them include restrooms and shaded rest spots, so it’s easy to plan short rides or longer routes depending on your day.

Horseback Riding

Looking for a classic Arizona adventure? White Stallion Ranch offers guided desert trail rides and optional overnight stays for the full guest ranch experience.

Activity Options:

  • Day and sunset trail rides

  • Riding lessons available

  • Authentic Western vibes with luxury touches

Birding

Did you know that Southern Arizona is one of the top birding hotspots in the entire country? With our mix of desert, riparian, and mountain habitats, plus two major migration seasons, it’s no wonder birders from all over the world come here to catch a glimpse of rare and seasonal species. Birdwatching has quickly become one of the most rewarding outdoor activities in Marana.

Right here in town, El Rio Preserve is a standout spot. This restored wetland area attracts dozens of species throughout the year, from shorebirds and herons to hummingbirds and songbirds. There’s an easy walking path, shaded seating areas, and viewing platforms that make it a peaceful place to slow down and take it all in.

When to go:

  • Early morning is best for spotting the most activity

  • Spring and fall migrations bring in unique and hard-to-find species

Golf

If golf is your way to unwind, you’re in the right place. Marana has some of the most scenic courses in Southern Arizona, with desert landscapes, mountain backdrops, and year-round tee times.

Top Courses:

  • The Gallery Golf Club – private, 36 holes, located in Dove Mountain

  • The Highlands at Dove Mountain – semi-private, great views, friendly atmosphere

  • Quarry Pines Golf Club – public course, unique elevation changes, former sand quarry
